Garamond is really a group of numerous old-style serif typefaces, named for sixteenth-century Parisian engraver Claude Garamond (commonly spelled as Garamont in his lifetime). Garamond-style typefaces are preferred and sometimes employed, specially for printing human body text and publications.

Garamond worked as an engraver of punches, the masters accustomed to stamp matrices, the moulds used to forged steel sort. His models followed the product of the influential style and design slash for Venetian printer Aldus Manutius by his punchcutter Francesco Griffo in 1495, and aided to establish exactly what is now known as the old-style serif letter style and design, letters by using a rather natural and organic construction resembling handwriting by using a pen, but having a a little bit extra structured and upright style.
